Investment in the Urban Water Supply The investment program of the National Water and Sanitation Authority has included 64 projects. Nine major projects have been implemented including the Rad’a Water and Sanitation, Exploration of New Water Resources in Sana’a , Water and Sanitation in Provincial Towns, Al Hasaba Emergency Sewage , Al Mukala Water Supply, Al Bilayli Sewage Project in Sana’a, Greater Aden Water Supply (Phase II), Tarim Water Supply and Al Mahwit Water Supply. Total investment for these projects reached 12.4 billion riyals. Seven other projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2000. These include the Sana’a Sewage Treatment Plant, Expansion of the Sana’a Sanitation and Water Supply, Al Tadhaman Region Sewage Project in Sana’a, Al Kharaba Sewage Project in Sana’a, Al Hasaba Water Tank, Taiz Pilot Water Project and Abss Water Supply in Hajja. The 2000 Investment Program has included 48 projects at an investment cost of 17.3 billion riyals. In order to cover the large gap in water services and supply of urban and rural portable water, several water drilling projects were implemented during 1990-1999. 825 wells were drilled in rural areas at a cost of 10.1 billion riyals. Beneficiaries are estimated at 2.4 million. In urban areas, around 428 wells were drilled. Water connections numbered more than 327,000 and sewage connections reached 145,000. The 31 branches of the National Water and Sanitation Authority did the connections.
