youngest winner Laly Ahmad Muhamed of Markaz Nur, Mombasa and Twenty year-old Mohammad Ishaq Adam from Wajir won the 7th Edition of the East African Quran Memorisation Competition that ended at Makadara grounds in Mombasa
Adam of Fathil Islamiya Muslim School memorised the whole Quran (30 chapters) in a competition well organised by Muslim Mercy Youth (MMY) and was awarded a Hajj package, plus Sh50,000 cash money. Talking to Coastweek immediately after being declared the winner, Adam who hails from North Eastern Province said he was very happy to have won the competition in his first attempt and asked fellow young Muslims to continue memorising the whole 30 Chapters of Quran. “This victory has given me encouragement to continue reading verses of Quran without looking at the holy book and also take keen interest in taking Islamic religious studies,” he said. Abdulaziz Hassan (17) of Munawwar, Mombasa took the second prize of Sh50,000. With Mukhtar Abdi Mohammed of Darul Ulum, Likoni claiming third place prize of Sh40,000. The youngest winner was seven-year-old Laly Ahmad Muhamed of Markaz Nur , Congo Boys Mombasa who finished top in the two chapters category and was presented with a Hajj package for his parent and Sh5,000.
Khalifa Ahmed (11) also of Markaz Nur took second position to claim Sh4,000 prize as third prize of Sh3,000 went to Mohamed Bakari (14) of Sheikh Zaid, Mombasa .
Other winners:-7.5 chapters: 1. Idris Abdi Athman (11), Markaz Ashifa of Jomvu, won Hajj package for parent and Sh30,000; 2. Twalha Hassan (13), Markaz Da’awah, Ukunda, Sh20,000; 3. Najah Abdi Mahmood (10), Darul Ulum, Likoni Sh15,000. Fifteen chapters: 1. Omar Hajj (16), Markaz A.Jabbar, Mariakni – Hajj package for parent and Sh50,000; 2. Mohammad Abubakar (17) Fathil Adhim, Sh40,000; 3. Omar Farah Haji (14) Taqwa, Migori, Sh30,000. Seventeen-year-old Habiba Abubakar of Munawwar emerged the overall winner in the girls’ section (30 chapters) was awarded Hajj package for her parent plus Sh20,000. Abu Hureira Academy ’s Asya Abdillahi (10) took second prize of Sh15,000. Other girls winners- Two chapters 1. Khansa Abdukarim (12) Munawwar, Hajj package plus Sh5,000; 2. Fakhita Najib (12) Markaz Nur, Sh3,500; 3. Amal Muhsin (12) Munawwar, Sh2,000. Seven and half chapters: 1. Mariam Hussein (17) Markaz Nur, Sh 10,000 plus Hajj package for her parent; 2. Khaula Salim (15) Al Fatiha Aacademy, Sh5,000; 3. Khannan Nurein Mohammed (15), Nuru Qurran- Malindi, Sh3,000. Fifteen chapters: 1. Sumeiya Mohammed Abdalla (14) Ibtisam, Mbwajumali, Sh15,000 and Hajj package for her parent; 2. Zainab Bosire Nurain (17) Nuru Quraniyah, Sh10,000; 3. Husna Bakari (15) Ibtisam Mbwajumali, Sh5,000. The Guest of Honour was Mombasa Kadhi, Sheikh Twalib who represented the Chief Kadhi, Sheikh Hammad Kassim. Other prominent personalities present at the function were the Tourism Minister, Najib Balala and a Mombasa businessman, Mr Rashid Amir. MMY chairman, Abdulrahman Bawazir and his secretary, Said Abeid thanked all those who participated in one way or the other to make this year’s competition succeed.This year’s competition attracted over 900 participants from all parts of the country, Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar , Uganda , Somalia and Burundi .
