A second Utalii College could finally be realised by end of the year following the release of Sh460 million by the Government.Minister for Tourism Mr Najib Balala announced in Malindi at the weekend that the cash had been set aside after acquisition of 60 acres of land at Vipingo in Bahari district,
“Finally we could reverse the injustice done to Coast Province by having a tourist college in the area which accounts for more than 60 per cent of the country’s tourism,” said the minister. Mr Balala said it was ironical that Kenya Utalii College was located in Nairobi which hardly had any tourism. The Coast had national parks, historical sites and the beaches among other tourist attractions, he said.Mr Balala led three other Coast MPs to demand a fully-fledged university campus in the Coast which he said had received a raw deal since independence.“It is ridiculous that 46 years after independence, Coast does not have a university college. We have been fooled and blindfolded with constituent colleges like the so-called Pwani University at Kilifi and Mombasa polytechnic. We want a full university now,” he said.Assistant minister for Education Mr Calist Mwatela (Mwatate), Mr Gideon Mung’aro (Malindi) and nominated MP Sheikh Muhamad Dor supported the minister on the same“We are discussing as Coast Parliamentary Group to chart the way forward for this region in all fields including education, economy, land, resources, health and others,” said Mr Mung’aro. The legislators revisited the majimbo issue saying the system of governance must be entrenched in the new Constitution.“If the majimbo system is not included in the new Constitution, we will reject it as Coast region,” said Mr Balala. He said the country should also go for the 2012 general elections with a new constitution and accused President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga of taking Kenyans for a ride.“The two principals have fooled Kenyans by promising them a new Constitution in 100 days after the coalition government came to being. But this was a farce,” he said
