Chief of SJC opens first two administrative tribunals in Yemen

Chief of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC)– Supreme Court Chief- Judge Essam al-Samawi, and Justice Minister Ghazi al-Aghbari, opened on Sunday the Administrative Court in the Capital Sana'a that has been equipped at the expense of the French government, and the Administrative Court in Aden province as the first two administrative tribunals in Yemen. At the opening ceremony, attended by the French ambassador to Yemen Joseph Silva and Resident Representative of UNDP in Sana'a Pratibha Mehta, al-Aghbari delivered a speech explaining the importance of these courts within the specialized courts, which are given great attention by the Justice Ministry. He expressed thanks and appreciation to the French government for the support it provided for the Yemeni government in general and for the judiciary in particular, as well as to the UNDP office for completing procedures of equipping of the courts.The establishment of the two courts is an important step, which would enhance the role of the judiciary, justice and the rule of law, al-Aghbari pointed out. He said that two departments would be established in a later stage for the administrative issues within the Courts of Appeal in the capital Sana'a and Aden province.For his part, the French envoy confirmed the depth of historical relations between France and Yemen, pointing to the importance of opening the two courts as a part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries."The establishment of administrative courts is a starting point for building the administrative law in Yemen, and France will work to support these courts", Silva said.Furthermore, the UNDP's official affirmed that the establishment of these courts reflects Yemen's fulfillment towards its obligations under ratified international treaties for the protection of human rights, as it would enhance the protection of human rights in Yemen by facilitating the access of citizens to justice. Mehta announced that the UNDP is formulating a project to facilitate access to justice, especially for vulnerable groups in addition to capacity-building of the judicial sector
