Fifteen armed al-Qaeda-linked elements have handed themselves over to Abyan governor Ahmad al-Maysari in southern Yemen. Official sources were quoted by the state-run 26sep.net as saying that the 15 al-Qaeda members were hiding out in a number of mountains at Mudyah and Laudar districts in Abyan province. The sources said that among those who handed themselves over were more than six dangerous elements, whose names top Yemen's most wanted list. The sources noted that al-Maysari assigned a number of chieftains and tribal parties to negotiate with six other wanted elements, some of whom were persuaded to surrender. The sources expected that they might turn themselves in during the coming few hours and that among the remaining six is the leader of an al-Qaeda armed group, Abdul-Minam al-Fatahani. Meanwhile, Shabwa governor Ali Hassan Ahmedi has said that government forces and tribal fighters had carried out sweeps together in nearby mountains, hunting for al-Qaeda elements.al-Ahmadi said the Awalik tribe is cooperating with local authorities in fighting al-Qaeda."The Awalik tribes assured that they are against al-Qaeda and they are ready to confront them if any of its elements appeared in their regions", he said.
