Yemen opens over 2000 literacy classes in 2009 – 2010

Literacy Centers in Yemen opened in the school year 2009 – 2010 about 7,259 classes compared with 6,339 in 2008 – 2009, a report of Education Ministry showed on Tuesday.
The report was presented by the Education Minister in the cabinet Tuesday meeting, which reviewed the implementation of the programs of illiteracy and adult education and the achieved outcomes in this regard.The report indicated that 4,618 classes were opened for women and the rest were for men in the school year 2009 – 2010, whereas in 2008- 2009 about 5,251 classes were opened for women.The literacy centers have taught in the school year 2009 – 2010 about 157,375 students, out of which 151,207 were women, according to the report. Moreover, the report pointed to the reduction of the illiteracy rates to 45.7 percent based on the census conducted in 2004 compared to 56 percent according to 1994 census. It also showed that the illiterate numbers in the active age group 10 – 45 years have dropped 35.9 percent based on 2004 census. The cabinet approved joining the plans of illiteracy and adult education in the comprehensive development plan as well as providing all the financial requirements in accordance to the National of Illiteracy and Adult Education.
