WCO says will continue technical assistance for Yemen Customs Authority

The World Customs Organization (WCO) said on Thursday it will continue its technical assistance for the Yemeni Customs Authority.
The announcement came after finalizing the stage of diagnosing and identifying deficiencies of the institutional customs works through sending a number of experts to prepare the executive program over the technical assistance for the authority in 2009. The organization also announced its approval for supporting the authority to finalize measures related to customs systems and improving customs management for joining the Kyoto protocol during this year so that the authority achieves maximum benefit from world expertise for Yemen to be an active member in the organization council.The remarks were given during the meeting of head of the authority Muhammad Zamam and Secretary General of the WCO Kunio Mikuriya in Brussels.The meeting held on the margins of Yemen's participation in the 32nd session of heads of the Customs Authorities in the Middle East and Far East, discussed aspects of cooperation between the organization and the authority.Zamam said there was agreement at the meeting for helping the authority to shift from the former customs valuation system to the World Trade Organization's valuation system.The move comes after Yemen had finalized requirements for WTO membership, he said, adding that Yemen may join the WTO by the end of this year. A number of cooperation programs between the authority and the WCO would be signed when Mikuriya arrives in Yemen in the second half of this year, Zamam said. Zamam also noted that he met with WCO officials in Brussels and discussed issues related Rules of origin and customs assessment.The 32nd session of head of the Customs Authorities in the Middle East and Far East held on Wednesday discussed ways of coordinating positions at the session of the WCO Council including supporting the Jordanian candidate for a post at the WCO. Zamam said the meeting approved to hold an Arab workshop in Sana'a in the second half of 2010 on fighting trafficking.
