An official source at the Interior Ministry has denied reports claiming that a man suspected of involvement in terrorist acts have been appointed at a senior police position. The source told Saba that the report published by the US-based Buzz Feed website "is not unfounded".
He said the man mentioned in the report had been arrested in 1992 on suspicion of affiliation to al-Qaeda and involvement in terrorist acts in Aden at the time. He was released in 1994 and he took part in the war to defend the unity.
Despite his cooperation with intelligence services in the fight against terrorism, that person has not ever been appointed in any security or government position, the source said.
The claims about appointing that man as an assistant to the head of police in Mukalla city of Hadhramout province have apparently stemmed from the fact that the man has moved from Sanaa to his hometown in Sayoun of Hadhramout during the recent unrest in Sana'a, the source added.
The source did not rule out that the promotion of such allegations aims at harming the relations between Yemen and the United States.
As for the information that Interior Ministry officials had received a tip on a plot by terrorists to escape from the central prison in Sana'a two months before the attack on the prison, the source pointed out that the case was referred to the investigation by the judiciary.
