Extraordinary, incredible, fantastic! And superlatives are not strong enough to describe the scenes of joy and jubilation that have taken hold of the capital on Wednesday night after the national football team’s qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. As soon as the referee from Seychelles blew the final whistle of Algeria’s decisive match against Egypt (1-0), Algiers and its surroundings turned into a real "arena" where this historic qualification was celebrated as it should be. Everywhere, the same setting! From Zeralda to Dely Brahim through Staoueli, Ain Benian, Ouled Fayet, Cheraga, Beni-Messous, El-Achour, Draria and Baba H'cen, endless processions of cars, screeching horns, converged downtown where hundreds of balconies wrapped in the national flag could be seen everywhere Algiers and its surroundings turned into a real "arena" where this
