The German-Yemeni Dialogue Conference „Re-approaching Reality – The
Perception of the Other in the Relations between the Western and the
Islamic Worlds“ will be held in Sana'a next Tuesday. In a
press release, the German embassy in Sana'a said on Sunday that the
conference will be opened by German Ambassador Michael Klor-Berchtold,
Rector of Sana'a University, Prof. Dr. Khaled Tamim, and Resident
Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Felix Eikenberg. "The
conference will address the perception of cultural, religious and
ethnic differences as a central component in every society. This
perception is not only important for the construction of the images we
have of other cultures and nations but also for defining our own
identities. When it comes to the perception of each other in the
relations of „the West“ and „the Islamic World“, crude prejudices and
oversimplifications often prevail", the statement reported. "The
conference will discuss this sensitive yet important issue on the basis
of the findings of a preceding Winter School with Yemeni and German
scholars and students that took place at Sana'a University. The
conference aims at dismantling those prevailing prejudices and
misunderstandings". Distinguished participants of the
conference are HE Dr. Abdulkarim al-Eryani, Presidential Advisor and
former Prime Minister of the Republic of Yemen, and HE Walter Kolbow,
Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary group of the Social Democratic
Party of Germany in the Federal German Parliament. Further participants
include internationally acknowledged German and Yemeni scholars and
Yemeni and German students. Moreover, the conference marks the
beginning of the festivities celebrating the 40th anniversary of the
resumption of German-Yemeni diplomatic relations.
