Yemen and U.S. discussed on Thursday cooperation areas between the two countries and ways of boosting them in the developmental, economic, political and security fields.
This came during a meeting gathered ,at the Congress Complex , the Chargé d'affaires of the Yemeni Embassy in Washington Adel al-Sonini and the U.S. Democratic Party member, Representative of the State of Nebraska at the Senate, Senator Ben Nelson. At the meeting, al-Sonini reviewed steps of the Yemeni government in meeting the requirements of the transitional phase to reach the Yemeni people's aspirations for more secure, stable and prosperous future. He stressed the importance of raising the ceiling of the U.S. economic, humanitarian and developmental aid for our country. In this regard, al-Sonini affirmed that the poverty and unemployment amid young people as well as the economic crisis has created a fertile environment for extremism and terrorism. In a statement to Saba, al-Sonin said that the embassy expects that the U.S. aid for our country to reach their highest level during this year compared to previous years, becuase of the efforts of the Yemeni political and diplomatic leadership and the understanding of the U.S. side for the challenges faced by Yemen in different areas. For his part, Senator Nelson confirmed his country's keenness to strengthen its relations and cooperation with Yemen, hailing the efforts made by Yemen in confronting terror and its victories in this aspect. He praised the Yemeni transitional phase ,pointing that it has become an important example of the peaceful and organized change of power in the region. On the other hand, al-Sonini met with the senior official of the Middle East affairs in the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Mara Radman, and discussed with her the assistance provided by the agency to our country for this year. Radman pointed to the successful visit of the USAID's Director to Yemen recently, during which $ 52 million was allocated for providing urgent humanitarian aid to support the national dialogue process. She confirmed that the total of the developmental and humanitarian aid to Yemen will exceed $ 170 million in this year. Al-Sonini praised the U.S. aid to Yemen, reviewing the challenges and obstacles faced by our country in the economic and developmental areas. He called the agency for more support and to urge the others to fulfill their pledges towards Yemen, so as to enable the Yemeni government to face the development needs.
