Rebuilding Yemeni eastern 2008 heavy-rain affected areas still needs $559 mln

The reconstruction fund of heavy-rain affected areas in Hadramout and Mahrah governorates said on Saturday that the fund still needs over $559 million to complete reconstruction efforts.
This came in a meeting of the fund's board of directors chaired by Prime Minister and board's chairman Mohammed Salem Basindwa, where they reviewed an achievement report of the fund on March 2009 – December 2011. The Board stressed the resumption of the fund's activities as soon as possible in coordination with the finance ministry on the financial allocations needed for the reconstruction plan for 2012.It approved forming a committee to address the pending issues impeding the implementation of Sheikh Khalifa housing city project in coordination with the UAE to solve such issues and complete service and infrastructure projects. In October 2008, Hadramout and Mahrah governorates were hit by a violent tropical storm and heavy rains continued for more than 35 hours. The total rainfall amount reached over two billion cubic meters.The disaster resulted in damage and losses to various social, productive and infrastructure sectors. The reconstruction in both governorates needed $929 million, according to the World Bank and relief reports.The fund has managed to accomplish the restoration of the Tarim city, Islamic culture capital in 2010, during a record period less than two months. It also housed more than 7,000 families in their restored homes or in new ones.UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered to Sheikh Khalifa Housing City in Hadramout to assist Yemen in alleviating the suffering of affected people.The $27 million project is financed by the UAE Red Crescent Authority, and aims to build 1000 homes, schools, and other community facilities.
