Minister of Industry and Trade Hisham Sharaf has headed for Turkey to participate in the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV).
The LDC-IV conference is to take place on 9-13 May, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey, and under the chairmanship of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.The conference will discuss the implementation of the seventh 10-year action plan for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) adopted at the Third United Nations Conference on LDCs in Brussels, Belgium, in 2001.The plans of the 47 LDCs from Africa and Asia related to developing infrastructure, attaining economic self-sufficiency, alleviating poverty and creating job opportunities in those countries will be reviewed in the conference. It is worth to mention that, the UN General Assembly convened the First United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Paris in 1981 to respond to the special needs of the LDCs.To continue the focus on the need for special measures for those countries, the General Assembly convened the Second United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries, also in Paris, in 1990. Its outcome was embodied in the Paris Declaration and Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the 1990s.
