WFP's support for IDPs in Yemen discussed

A meeting was held here on Wednesday to discuss the support provided by the World Food Programme (WFP) for the internally displaced people (IDPs) due to Saada events.
The meeting, chaired by Caretaker Minister of Public Health and Population Abdul-Karim Rase'a ,dealt also with the security permissions of the United Nations Organizations working in the humanitarian aspect. Rase'a valued efforts made by donor countries which responded to the requirements submitted by Yemen in the donors meeting in Geneva last year. He pointed out that the response rate amounted until this Wednesday to 29 percent, nearly USD 56 million out of the total required support that equals USD 224 million ,with continued support by donors for the IDPs and refuges ,who constitute a real problem for the State especially in the current circumstances. In this regard, Rase'a hailed efforts made by the UN organizations working in Yemen, including WFP ,UNHCR, WHO and UNICEF. For his part, the WFP Representative in Yemen Gian Carlo praised the Yemeni government's efforts in helping the refugees and IDPs, reviewing the current difficulties in the finance obtained by the Programme and the other UN humanitarian organizations working in Yemen.Carlo stressed that the WFP would carry out a new survey to make sure the precedence of IDPs in need, pointing out that this support expires at the end of 2011 .The Yemeni government should take appropriate action to address the problem of IDPs and work on their return to their villages and places of work, Carlo added.
