Combating terrorism, piracy tops Yemeni-Russian cooperation in 2010

The Russian ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Trofimov has revealed that there is an agreement between Yemen and Russia to reinforce the bilateral cooperation in combating international terrorism and sea piracy in the Indian Ocean and Aden Gulf in 2010.
The agreement includes coordination and cooperation between the Foreign Ministries in the two countries and exchanging information between the intelligence and security agencies. In a press release to Alsyasiah newspaper issued on Thursday, the Russian diplomat made it clear that the Russian President's Representative for Issues of International Cooperation for Combating Terrorism would visit Yemen in the beginning of 2010 to hold talks with officials of the National Security and Interior Ministry to establish a real cooperation in the intelligence areas for combating terror and maritime piracy.He affirmed that his country supports Yemen's security and stability, since it is aware of the importance of Yemen's strategic position in the region."Russia cooperates with Yemeni government and people and at the same time it sees that what happens in Yemen is an internal affair", he said.The ambassador noted that there are strong cooperation relations between the two countries in the different fields in addition to the wide horizons to enhance this cooperation in the economic, trade, military and cultural fields.About 2000 Russian physicians and nurses are working in all Yemeni areas including Socotra Island, he indicated.He also pointed out that the number of Russian scholarships presented to Yemeni students has raised from 60 to 80 scholarships within two years only ,expressing his country's readiness to increase this number to 100 scholarships if Yemen wants."Personally I will do every effort to develop the historical relations between the two countries ", the ambassador said pointing that Yemen is one of the first Arab states that signed conventions of friendship and economic cooperation with the former Soviet Union.It is worth to mention that the real start of Yemeni-Russian relations dates back to November 1st, 1928, after signing the first treaty of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
