Yemen has witnessed series of significant events in the last decade including:
12 June 2000: Yemen and Saudi Arabia signed Jeddah Border Treaty.
12 October 2000: The American guided missile destroyer, USS Cole was attacked in Aden harbor. About 17 US soldiers were killed in the attack.
20 February 2001: The first election of Local Councils in Yemen.
22 September 2002: Yemen's youth football team qualified for the World Cup for the first time.
28 December 2003: The Assistant Secretary General of Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP) Jarrallah Omar was murdered during the opening session of the 3rd general conference of Islah Party.
19 June 2004: the eruption of the first war against al-Houthi rebellion led by Husain al-Houthi, who was killed on September 2004.
28 December 2005: About 65 people were killed and tens of houses were destroyed due to a rockslide at Dhafir Village in Sana'a governorate.
20 September 2006: President Ali Abdullah Saleh was elected for second presidential term.
29 December 2007: Parliament Speaker Abdualla bin Hussein al-Ahmar died in the Fisal Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
24 October 2008: Heavy rainstorm hit Hadramout and Mahrah governorates claiming the lives of tens and displacing thousands in addition to over $ 1 billion losses.
23 February 2009: Yemeni political powers reached a deal to postpone the parliament election.
14 June 2009: Nine foreigners were kidnapped in Sa'ada governorate, three of them, including two German women and a S. Korean woman, were later killed.
30 June 2009: a Yemeni jetliner A300-310 crashed off Comoros islands with 153 people aboard.
7 November 2009: Yemen joined gas exporters' club, after announcing officially exporting the first liquefied Natural Gas shipment.
17 and 24 December 2009: Yemen launched pre-emptive raids against al-Qaeda hideouts in Abyan, Sana'a and Shabwa governorates
