Prime Minister Ali Mujawar said on Wednesday that the water shortage is
on the top of challenges of development facing Yemen in the current and
coming period
In his speech to participants in the workshop over the annual evaluation for water national strategy and 2006 investment program for water sector, Mujawar said that government works to find solutions for tackling water shortage in several regions across the country by serious thinking of desalination. The government is trying to take all required measures to improve usage of water resources, he said.
The minister made it clear that the annual evaluation affirmed concern of the government on developing water sector, calling on all to gather all efforts at official and public level to stop acts of mishandling and random use of water.
He highlighted technical and financial support offered by donors for water sector in the country, saying that the government would deal with outcomes of the workshop seriously.
For his part, Minister of Water and Environment Abdul-Rahman al-Eryani said that Yemen becomes one of the world less capability of managing and using water. He insisted on the importance of using modern means of improving capabilities of using water.
Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Mansour al-Hawshabi said that the 90 percent of using water for agricultural products is not a real indication of water usage due to the use of traditional means of irrigation. He pointed out to modern irrigation tools and usage of information technology in improving management of water resources.

Anita Freak, representative of the donors group talked about suggestions which have been discussed with the government to preserve water such as setting up an agency of water and carrying our studies on water reservoirs and means of preserving them. She affirmed the importance of cooperation with ministries of water, agriculture and planning to tackle water shortage.
