Yemen, UNDP sign $1.3 mln sustainable natural resources management project

Yemen and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed on Monday the document of a $ 1.3 million Sustainable Natural Resources Management Project (SNRMP), Phase II. Yemen will contribute $ 400,000 (250,000 in cash, 100,000 parallel financing and 50,000 in kind), and UNDP will contribute $ 800,000 and will help mobilize an additional $ 200,000.The document was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Abdul Kareem Al-Arhabi and UNDP Resident Representative to Yemen Ms. Pratibha Mehta.The project’s aim is to enhance sustainable management of natural resources at the national and local levels, pilot mainstreaming of climate change and promote livelihood approaches for women and youth participation in protected areas management and equitable use of natural resources.The project will capitalize on the achievements and capacities built in phase I of SNRMP and enhance them, through implementation of a set of integrated interventions focusing on sustainable management of natural resources and promotion of livelihood approaches for community-based management of protected areas at the local levels.The project will support enhancement of protected areas policy framework through development of a 10 year strategic vision and development of policy tools for protected areas planning and management. Involvement of women and youth groups in protected areas management will be promoted at the local levels, particularly in delivering of eco-tourism services, piloting of use of renewable energy, and participation in income-generating activities and production and marketing of products in the protected areas.National capacities in environmental information management and monitoring and reporting on the status of protected areas also will be supported by the project. Furthermore, it will enhance awareness levels of the general public and school children’s on environmental sustainability and protected areas management.The SNRMP II is aligned with the national priorities, as reflected in the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and UNDP County Programme Action Plan (2007-2011), which focus on enhancement of national capacities for sustainable of natural resources, decentralization of protected areas management through strengthening community-based management and enhancement of livelihood approaches at the locaThe meeting discussed aspects of support presented by Qatar in the fisheries field particularly establishing service projects in the fish landing sites, topped by the roads linking the centers with the main production lines.On the other hand, Shamlan discussed with the Omani ambassador in Sana'a Abdullah al-Badi cooperation areas between Yemen and Oman in fields of fishing, marine control and inspection and management and quality.
