Parliament discusses constitutional amendments on local authority

Almotamar.net - Member of the General Committee of the General People's Congress (GPC), the Head of the Political Office Abdullah Ahmed Ghanim has said the Yemeni parliament would soon discuss constitutional draft amendments in the light of what was previously discussed at the Shoura Council in this regard. In a statement to Al-Mithaq published Monday Ghanim said that the announcement of President Ali Abdullah Saleh , the Chairman of the GPC on conducting constitutional amendments including development of the local authority system to the local rule system with large powers , came as confirmation of a previous stands of the GPC under leadership of President Saleh. The GPC official indicated that the awaited constitutional amendments come as part of the GPC programme in the presidential and local elections held on 20 September 2006. Mr Ghanim clarified that in addition to the amendments relating to transfer to the local rule, there is a group of other questions to be included in those amendments, among them the reconsideration of the electoral system.
