More than 184,000 persons enrolled in centers of literacy eradication across the country in 2008, an official said on Monday. Director of Illiteracy Eradication and Adults Education Body Ahmed Abdullah Ahmed said that the Yemen achieved progress in combating illiteracy, saying that more than 184,000 persons enrolled in centers of illiteracy last year at increase of 11.3 percent compared to 2007.
According to the official statistics, there are 4 million Yemeni illiterates- most of them are living in rural areas because bad economic situation. More than one million children are still out of school, the statistics said. It is worth mentioning that Yemen would mark the international literacy day like other world countries on 8th September.
