Yemen's Justice Minister expressed Saturday the readiness of the Judicial Authority to nominate judges from lower courts in the provinces of Aden, Taiz and Mukalla to made decisions over press issues. Meeting with head of the Yemeni Journalist Syndicate, Ghazi Shaef al-Aghbari said he would submit a proposal over the issues to the Supreme Judicial Council. "I will put forward a proposal for amending the fourth provision in a recent decision on the establishment of a press court," the minister added. The appointments would be among judicial measures to be taken next month, he said. The decision to set up the court, which was issued last month after some newspapers were accused of targeting the national unity and reporting secessionism, comes within an effective judicial strategy aiming at creating a specialized judiciary for sensitive issues which require immediate verdicts. The government had been weighing the idea for three months before the decision was made in April. What protects journalists in a democratic state such as Yemen is their adherence to their profession charter and constitution. Journalists must not abuse their profession. For his part, head of the Yemeni journalists Yasin al-Masaudi urged better partnership between the syndicate and the ministry to hold training courses and awareness programs to introduce journalists to laws. He said the court should be like other courts but not a typical one with which freedom of expression is stifled.
