WFP to initiate assistance project to poor families in Yemen

World Food Programme (WFP) is to launch next May a foodstuff assistance project to alleviate poverty suffering of poor families in some governorates in the country.The project targets about 55,366 poor cases in 25 districts at the governorates of Hodeidah, Baidha'a, Shabwa, Abyan, Hajjah and Amran. For this purpose, the WFP has assigned field teams to conduct surveys on the poor families in the districts.The field teams depend, to identify targeted cases, on official data collected from several surveys, such as the national poverty survey and the national family budget survey in addition to other economic surveys carried out in the country in the previous years.The WFP allocated in 2008 about $ 55 million to support the government's efforts to counter the consequences of global food prices hike. It also appropriated 30 tons of foodstuffs to alleviate poor families suffering from soars of the global food prices
