Secretary General of the Arab Women General Federation, the Chairwoman of the Yemen Women Union Ramzia Abbas al-Eryany has on Thursday valued the role played by the Yemen Justice Minister Dr Ghazi al-Aghbari in pushing forward the legal amendments on the law of personal status and its approval by the parliament on Wednesday in rising the marriage age of the female to 17 years. Ms al-Eryany also valued the responsible stances of members of parliament and members of the cabinet in defending all the laws that lift injustice. She has pointed out that marriage of small girls causes rise in rate of fatalities during giving birth as a result of early pregnancy, which is in violation of human rights. She further pointed out that courts in Yemen are full of inhumane cases reflecting the volume of disasters resulting from marriage of small girls. The parliament on Wednesday approved rising the age of the female marriage to 17 years, rejecting a proposal by the concerned parliamentary committee on reducing the age of female marriage to 15 years in violation of the government amendment of article 15 of the personal status law that stipulated that the female marriage age should be at 18 years.
