Yemen, US discuss agricultural cooperation

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Farid Mujawar met on Sunday with Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Yemen Herbie Smith and the Economic Affairs officer at the US embassy in Sana'a.
The two sides discussed a mechanism to accelerate the absorption of the U.S. support for the implementation of the agricultural development projects and programs in Yemen so as to enhance the role of the agricultural sector in achieving food security.
In the meeting, the minister pointed out that the agricultural sector is a key productive sector in Yemen and the majority of the population depends on it as a primary source in providing their food needs, calling for doubling aid from friends and donors and focusing on supporting agricultural activities.
In this regard, Mujawar valued the U.S. support to the agricultural sector, especially at the current circumstances experienced by the country in the various fields.
For their part, the U.S. officials confirmed their country's readiness to continue to support the development paths in Yemen, especially in the agricultural field.
They stressed the importance of forming a committee to follow up the procedures for speeding up the maximum use of the American support to finance the implementation of the agricultural development projects in Yemen.
