The productivity of food grains in Yemen dropped in 2013 to 863,934 tons, with a decrease of 45,807 tons compared to 2012. However, the area planted with grain crops has seen a relative improvement during the year 2013, as it amounted to 857,024 hectares, compared to 854,689 hectares in the previous year.
Director of Marketing and Trade at Ministry of Agriculture Farooq Mohammad Qasim said to Saba that this decline in the productivity of food grains is due to a number of variables faced by the agricultural activity in the country, including the lack of diesel, which had a negative impact on the productivity of most food crops and the low quality of agricultural products in general.
Qasim pointed out that there are also other factors affecting the productivity of food grains, including the lack of rainfall, and the drought that affected most of the agricultural areas and valleys during the last agricultural season.
The food grain crops' cultivation in Yemen depends mainly on rain water, especially in agricultural terraces, valleys and bottoms and widely in the provinces.
