USAID implements $175 mln projects in Yemen in 2014

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is to implement development projects in Yemen worth of $175 million in 2014, the USAID Mission Director in Yemen said on Sunday. In a press conference held in Sana'a, Herbie Smith spelt out that the projects would be executed in cooperation with Yemen's Planning and International Cooperation Ministry in the fields of health, education, agriculture.
He also said that the projects would also include supporting of the transitional stage, good governance, democracy as well as humanitarian assistance.
The USAID focuses on improving living stands of Yemenis, health care, education, training youth and providing job opportunities, Smith said.
"The United States made 87% of its pledges to Yemen via the USAID," pointing out that the Agency works with Yemen government to get rid of ghost workers, removal of subsidies on petroleum products and improving economic policies.
He also said that USAID trains Yemeni youth through bringing them together with investors, and present their proposals to investors with the aim of developing them to projects.
"USAID provided $10 million to reconstruction, humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation of schools in Abyan," he added.
Smith also commended early literacy projects implemented by USAID in collaboration with the Education Ministry, praising, in the meanwhile, the ministry's cooperation in this area.
