The Group of Ten Ambassadors of the permanent five members of the UN Security Council, the GCC and EU to Yemen expressed deep concern about the ongoing violence in the northern areas of the capital Sana’a.
“The Group of Ten Ambassadors is deeply concerned in particular by the violence in the North which is now threatening to draw in yet more of the country as armed groups move towards the capital, Sana’a”, the ambassadors said on Friday in a joint statement.
The Group of Ten Ambassadors expressed its sincere appreciation for the clear leadership shown by President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi in building consensus through dialogue.
“It calls on all parties involved in the on-going violence throughout the country to work together with President Hadi to establish a meaningful political dialogue in order to resolve their differences. Such dialogue is a critical element in the political transition as set out in the GCC Initiative and Implementation Mechanism and is required if National Dialogue Conference conclusions are to be effectively implemented in a timely manner”.
It called for a de-escalation of tensions and underlines that political divergences must be solved through dialogue not violence “if Yemen is to achieve the aspirations of its people. Intimidation by armed groups acting unlawfully and in disregard of the interests of the people will not be tolerated”.
