Yemen, WFP discuss expanding activities to support education

Education Minister Abdul-Razzaq al-Ashwal discussed on Thursday with World Food Programme (WFP) representative in Yemen Bishaw Parajuli mechanisms to expand the WFP activities in support of the educational sector.
The discussion was held in the light of raising the educational sector aid for the last 6 months, from $8 million to $87 million. The aid will be dispensed at the mid of 2014 through the distribution of a daily food ration for 900,000 students and foodstuffs for 215,000 female students to encourage girls' education as well as distributing a food ration for 50,000 children out of school in order to help to return them to school.
During the meeting, al-Ashwal and Parajuli approved forming a technical team to design an operation manual includes the required mechanisms and standards, and to draw an action plan for the future project to ensure the beginning of the implementation in the mid of 2014.
The Minister valued highly the WFP contributions to support education in the country, pointing to the importance of the sustainability of WFP projects and raising their allocations in order to increase the level of school enrollment.
Parajuli underlined the WFP's commitment to increase aid for education, as a key pillar of sustainable development.
