UK to provide humanitarian aid to 1mln people in Yemen

British International Development Minister Alan Duncan said Monday his country would provide humanitarian aid to a million people in Yemen during the current year. In a press conference held Monday in Sana'a, Duncan made clear that the aid comes within support would be provided by the United Kingdom for two years of £70 million of its total pledges, amounting to £196 million, made at the donors' conference held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, in September 2012.
The UK Minister declared the support includes the provision of humanitarian aid of food, shelter and water over two years to about1.65 million people suffering from malnutrition, noting that more than fifth of Yemen's population are in dire need of food aid.
The United Nations (UN) stressed that the need of Yemen in humanitarian fields during this year is about $ 716 million, up 20% from last year, he added.
The UK diplomat pointed out that the UK has provided £33 million for the years 2012- 2013 and it was the largest third humanitarian donor to Yemen in the past year, according to the Financial Tracking Service (FTS) of the UN.
Remaining the humanitarian crisis in Yemen without tackling it would threaten the ongoing political transition process in Yemen; he said, referring to the British support in this area aiming to succeeding the transition process in the country.
Duncan went further by saying that the coming Yemen Friends' meeting in the UK in the coming month would review a number of issues related to carry out the national dialogue conference successfully as well as mechanisms of accommodating pledges by donors.
