USAID assists hospitals in Yemen

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has delivered US$16,678 worth of medical consumables to the University of Science and Technology Hospital (USTH) in Sana'a to support the treatment of emergency cases "Since July 2010, the U.S. government has provided $1.7 million in assistance to 65 Yemeni health facilities in six governorates, including health units in remote areas, health centers, rural hospitals, and hospitals in governorate capitals", the U.S. embassy in Sana'a has said in a press release.The U.S. has provided equipment such as x-ray machines and generators; furniture such as hospital beds and filing cabinets; medical consumables such as bandages, sutures, gloves, and masks; and training on the use of all equipment provided.In close coordination with Yemen's Ministry of Health, U.S. government assistance has improved the quality and access to medical care for more than one million Yemeni beneficiaries.In total, USAID's budget this year for health exceeds US$9.0 million. In addition to assistance to hospitals, the U.S. government supports the training of health professionals; the operations of mobile health units in marginalized areas of the country; the expansion of maternal, child health, and immunization programs; and the improvement of Yemen's health information systems.
