Arabs powerless to do anything; Yemeni Minister

Foreign Minister Abu-Bakr al-Qirbi has affirmed that Yemen believes in the need to go directly to the UN Security Council to discuss the developments in the Palestinian issue to benefit from the international position that supports the Arab right In an interview with pan-Arab daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, the Yemeni minister said that the Arab states come to the Arab summit each year with hopes for big accomplishments on the level of joint Arab action, and had it not been for these hopes, "we would be powerless to do anything".‘’We presented a concrete treatment for the situation of the Arab League and called for the establishment of an Arab union based on experience in other parts of the world, such as the EU, the African Union, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’’, said al-Qirbi. With regard to the activities of President Ali Abdullah Saleh during the Arab summit held last week in Libya, al-Qirbi said that President Saleh had briefed his Arab counterparts on what is really happening in Yemen, away from bad media reports.‘’President Ali Abdullah Saleh briefed the Arab leaders on the efforts the government is making now to establish peace and deal with the situation in the southeastern governorates of the country, based on the constitution, the law and Yemen's unity’’.In the conclusion of the interview, the Yemeni official said that Yemen views al-Qaeda as an international organization that does not exist in one specific country, ‘’it is in Europe and the United States, and represents a problem for us in Yemen, exactly as for the Americans’’.‘’By virtue of its economic circumstances and resources, Yemen has said and continues to say that it needs to develop its capabilities to combat terrorism’’
