Youngest finalist will be a six-year-old boy, Arrangements have been completed for this year's Quran Memorisation Competition to be held at Makadara grounds in Mombasa from September 10-13, 2009 . According to the Muslim Mercy Youth (MMY) chairman Abdulrahman Bawazir and Secretary Said Abeid, the event has attracted 600 participants, but only 115 males and 65 females have qualified for the finals.Mr Abeid said the competition has an international flavour with participants from Rwanda , Burundi , Zambia , Malawi , Somali , Congo , Uganda , Tanzania Mainland, Zanzibar and Pemba , having confirmed their taking part.The youngest finalist will be a six-year-old boy who has memorised the entire Quran by heart.Chief Guest of Honour will be the Chief Kadhi of Kenya , Sheikh Hammad Kassim.Mr Bawazir said among the prizes to be awarded to the winners are seven Hajj packages worth Sh1,855,600 plus over Sh800,000 cash awards.Total prizes will be worth K. Shs. 2.6 million.He said the competition attracted overwhelming interests and over 900 people were tested during the preliminary contest held in major towns all over Kenya .The finalists are expected to come from Ndhiwa, Migori, Kisumu, Busia, Nakuru, Wajir, Garissa, Moyale, Nairobi , Mtito Andei, Malindi, Kilifi, Witu, Lamu, Mbwajumwali, Mombasa and Ukunda.Muslim Mercy Youth is a youth organisation based in Mombasa which has been hosting Quran Memorisation competition for the last seven years successfully during the holy fasting month of Ramadhan.Last year, the event was covered by Aljazeera television (English) which showed in its documentary programme during Ramadhan.In another development, Mr Abeid told Coastweek that MMY has received international recognition and has selected some participants to take part in some of international competitions.Mohammed Moge was named to represent Kenya in Tanzania and Zanzibar International Memorisation Competition with Muhsin Abdulkadir to participate in Zanzibar International Memorisation Competition while Mohamed Malim Hassan to take part in Djibouti tournament.
