Women National Committee WNC on Sunday considered the request of some members of parliament for deliberation again regarding the fixing of marriage age as a threat to the decision the parliament had approved at the beginning of last February.
The WNC said it has endeavored, along with some government parties and civil society organisations, to have a law issued defining safe marriage age at 18 years but the parliament approved a law that determined the marriage age at 17 years.
In a press release, almotamar.net obtained a copy of it, the WNC called on all newspapers and media channels in Yemen for forming a public opinion supporting to set up marriage age at 17 years by, what it said, standing seriously by the issue and to tackle it with all of its social dimensions and effects in addition to discussing the problems resulting from it for the protection of rights.
The statement mentioned that defining the marriage age would spare the woman and the society many of dangers and work on lessening the average of fatalities and curb the population explosion as well as completing the education stages for males and females. The WNC also expressed the hope that interest of the media would have its effect on issues of the woman positively on reality of the woman that is burdened with traditional heritage. It said that heritage bears discrimination against the woman and keeping her outside the circle of participating in the society. The WNC, Yemen Women Union, Children parliament and other civil organisations in Yemen had called on the parliament to not back down from its approval of the amendments made on the personal status law that included the definition of marriage age at 17 years
