Deputy SP meets NDI Resident Director

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hemiar al-Ahmar met here on Saturday with the Resident Director of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) Heather Therrien and Director of Response Project Perry Reid.
At the meeting, al-Ahmar was briefed by the directors of NDI and Response Project on the Project's main objectives, which includes boosting up the policy-making mechanisms and implementation and raising transparency and public participation in policy-making as well as promotion and support of the Civil Society Organization (CSOs)'s participation in the public policies' development and implementation. Reid said that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-financed Project aims to build the institutions' capacities, improving the public services' quality and encouraging citizens to take part in decision-making process. He pointed out that the project will work jointly with the government for combating all forms of corruption and strengthening capacities. It will work with CSOs and citizens for playing a key role in joining in developing policies and monitoring their implementation.Moreover, Therrien acquainted al-Ahmar with an outline of the 2010 activities, which have focused on the evaluation of joint programs between the parliament and NDI in addition to the 2011 activities to be carried out in collaboration with the Parliament.A number of topics related to the projects and programs implemented mutually by the parliament and NDI in 2010 were also touched on in the meeting.For his part, al-Ahmar valued highly the role NDI plays in setting up the joint programs aimed to strengthen the capacity of the Parliament in technical, legislative and supervisory areas.
