Daily practice of the press in Yemen scientifically shows and without doubts that the ceiling of the press here has transcended the boundaries set by the enforced law, Information minister said on Monday. Publications increase in Yemen rapidly, with more than 460 papers and magazines published daily, Minister Hassan al Lawzi said. The remarks were given when al Lawzi met with Michele Cervone D'Urso, head of the EU delegation to Yemen, within replies to some questions on current steps to develop the press and publication law in the country.Al Lawzi gave a detailed explanation of the real practice of journalism according to the constitution and the laws of the press and freedom of expression. The new publication law, which was also crystallized by the Shura, comes to tackle all deficiencies in the current law, and the government is working hard to introduce it perfectly, he told the EU diplomat."The new law bans imprisoning or arresting any journalist for practicing his profession or for expressing their views. The law, however, stipulates financial punishments of violators."Furthermore, the law had less publication restrictions for the law to be in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, added al Lawzi.D'Urso praised the developed practice of the press in Yemen, as he put forward a proposal calling for organizing a meeting with media and press leaders to discuss some issues and clarify them to the public opinion.Earlier, al Lawzi met with director of the British Council in Sana'a Michael White. The meeting focused on some proposals by the British Council for cooperation with Yemeni media with the aim of promoting the learning of English through audible and visible media
