VP meets former U.S. ambassador to Yemen

Vice President Abdu Rabo Mansour Hadi met here on Tuesday with the former U.S. ambassador to Yemen Barbara Bodine.
At the meeting, Hadi and Bodine reviewed a number of issues related to the economic and political situation in Yemen and various challenges facing Yemen, particularly al-Qaeda terrorist acts, rebels in north and security disturbances in some southern areas, as well as piracy off the Somali coast and the Gulf of Aden.Hadi noted the significance of the international navigation line in this region, through which more than 3 million barrels of oil a day pass to Europe and different regions of the world.He stressed the importance of joint cooperation to enhance the capacities of Yemeni Coastguard to protect the Yemeni coasts from the infiltration of terrorists across the sea. On the democratic and political aspect, Hadi pointed to the February agreement in 2009, which was to postpone the elections for two years and at the request of the U.S., the EU and the opposition parties of the Joint Meeting Parties (JMPs).Hadi said that this postponement has caused a lot of problems between the ruling party, the General People's Congress (GPC) and the JMPs.Moreover, Hadi called on the U.S. and the EU to assist Yemen politically and economically to overcome some economic problems, praising Bodine's efforts, especially that she was the U.S. ambassador to Yemen in a difficult period, during the 1994 summer war against separation plot.For her part, Bodine expressed her happiness to visit Yemen, confirming that the U.S. supports Yemen and understand circumstances experienced by Yemen.She pointed out that the democracy in Yemen is an important and positive aspect and everyone has to maintain it, including the holding of elections that represents the essence of democracy.
