Yemen seizes 39 tons of hashish in five years

The Yemeni security agencies have seized about 39 tons of hashish over the last five years, the Interior Ministry reported on Friday.
According to the ministry’s statistics, the security forces also seized more than 17 million narcotic pills and detained 1137 people accused, including 137 Arab and foreign nationals. The ministry made it clear that the security services seized in 2010 about 151 drug offenses in a number of the Yemeni provinces and detained 261 suspects involved in those crimes, including 11 foreigners and 250 Yemenis.The statistics confirmed that the security services foiled 300 smuggling operations in three years, and seized ten tons of hashish in a number of the Yemeni provinces.The report showed that 2005 saw 45 cases and 86 defendants. In 2006, there were 119 cases, and 199 accused. In 2007, there were 140 cases and 226 accused.The Yemeni border areas with Saudi Arabia and Oman were drug-trafficking hotspots.Drugs have been found inside modified parts in cars and trucks transporting goods between Yemen and neighbouring countries.Trucks from neighbouring countries transporting used items such as furniture and clothes were seized on their way back with drug shipments after their loads were emptied.
