Electricity demand in Yemen has been rising by an annual 9 per cent, a matter which requires boosting electricity generation, Minister for Electricity and Energy said on Friday. The Increasing demand also requires well-studied plans and quick implementation of projects, Awadh al Socotri said, as he said that the second stage of Marib Gas-Fired Power Station to be commenced early next year will represent a specific step in the energy sector.
The project, which will be implemented with $ 392.7 million, was approved by the Supreme Tender Committee last Wednesday and included importing, installing and experimenting the station, which will generate 400 megawatts of power, he said in a statement to Saba.It is one of the strategic projects in the country, and will help stabilize power supplies and reduce oil subsidies as well as shifting to small stations operating with diesel and mazot, he said."The government is giving priority to the electricity sector through allocating suitable external funds to develop it due to its significant role in the process of development and investment."In the future, a new station can be added to Marib 2 to benefit from the gas heat without using new gas to generate 40 per cent of the station capacity, he said.
