Parliament listens to report over Govt's performance in 2009

The Parliament listened on Saturday to a report ,presented by Prime Minister Ali Mujawar, on the government performance in 2009. The Premier reviewed in the report the government achievements during the past year. He pointed out that the government's performance in 2009 was exceptional both in terms of challenges or obstacles that accompanied it increasingl These obstacles and challenges represented in the low oil prices in global markets, the decline in productivity, or increasing the burdens of the society needs in front of challenges relating to the high rate of population growth and geographical dispersion of the population centers that reach more than 130 centers, he indicated. Mujawar pointed out that these challenges also represented in the slow growth rates of access to education ,the shortage of school building ,growing needs of electric power, the crisis of water resources, the high rate of illiteracy and increasing rates of unemployment and other challenges and difficulties experienced in 2009 in the face of limited resources. He said that those challenges and obstacles could be addressed, noting that there are evidences of the possibility of addressing them, which began with the decision of the political leadership to halt the military operations in Saada province and reduce the public spending as much as possible, especially in unnecessary items, and joint action and international coordination to confront sea piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Arab Sea. Mujawar reviewed the achievements made by the government in 2009 as well as the good indicators in dealing with these issues and challenges in order to achieve growth rates in most sectors of the economy and administration. He noted to achievements in the fight against terrorism by cracking down on al-Qaeda and its financial resources, reducing its operations and killing and arresting a number of its members, in addition to the relief of displaced people due to the rebellion in Saada and Harf Sufyan through 13 camps which lodge about 80,000 persons of the total number of the displaced which amounts to 350,000 persons, and the competition of reconstruction in 9,000 facilities during the first half of 2009 at an estimated cost of USD 1.5 billion. In addition, he pointed to the growing interest in the implementation of facilities in the provinces Aden, Lahj and Abyan for the 20th Gulf Cup to be hosted by Yemen in the last week of next November. In the economic area, the achievements represented in the decline in the annual decline rate of crude oil to 4 percent, compared to 8 percent 2006-2008, and the completion of construction of the 341-MW Marib gas-powered electricity generating plant, which entered into service during the first half of 2010 to reduce power frequent outages, Mujawar indicated. In addition, he noted to operating the project of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export that contributed to the development of the State revenues for 2010 with about YR 80 billion, and the implementation of a number of road projects at a length of 1235 kilometers. The government was able to face the repercussions of the heavy rains and floods disaster in the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Mahrah, and establish a building in the capital Sana'a for the Regional Center to combat piracy with the support of the European Union and the International Maritime Organization, he added.In this regard, Mujawar alluded to Yemen's efforts in combating sea piracy in the Arab Sea and the Gulf of Aden through thwarting a number of pirac A number of parliamentarians made comments on what came in the government's report, stressing the need that the government works to provide effective solutions for the issue of deficit in the budget and to seriously work to reduce poverty and unemployment and address the security disorders witnessed by some provinces of the country.
