EU is keen to support Yemen to face challenges, European official says

Director of external relations with Middle East and South Mediterranean at the European Commission, Tomas Dupla Del Moral, affirmed on Wednesday the keenness of the European Union to keep its support to Yemen to face challenges.
"Yemen faces great challenges and the EU will support Yemen to face them according to a comprehensive program that includes the economic and political areas and human rights", said Moral in a press conference held here at the headquarters of the European Commission.
He noted that the EU is interested in supporting Yemen's efforts to enhance financial reforms, democracy, and decentralization as well as assisting the social sector to alleviate poverty.
The EU encourages the national dialogue between the various political parts in Yemen at the President's call, Moral said, affirming at the same time the keenness of the EU on non-interference in internal affairs of Yemen.He pointed out the need of power and opposition to work together for the success of the dialogue and holding the elections on its constitutional and legal time, as this would help Yemen to face all challenges, hoping that efforts continue to achieve that."The elections law in Yemen has included some of the recommendations of the EU mission to monitor the past elections, which aimed to improve the election system", the EU official said adding that the EU would consider sending a mission to observe the upcoming parliamentary elections if requested by the Yemeni government.He explained that the meetings, he held during his current visit to Yemen with officials in the power and the political parties in Yemen, aimed to identify their views and current positions towards the dialogue and elections"I am optimistic that there are signals to the success of the dialogue and holding elections on time, especially since everyone calls for a comprehensive dialogue", he said.On supporting Yemen's efforts to combat terrorism, the EU official affirmed the EU support to Yemen to face the challenges including the fight against terrorism and piracy through capacity-supporting, training aspects, cooperation and coordination weather through direct support by the EU or by the Member States of the Union.
