Yemen and World Food Program (WFP) called for help from the local and international organizations to offer humanitarian assistance to respond to needs of the Internally Displaced Persons IDPs in Saada and Harf Sufyan The head of the Yemeni Executive Unit of Running IDPs camps Ahmed al-Kohlani wished a positive response to the call in presenting humanitarian assistance, which could support efforts of the Yemeni government and the UN program as well as their main partners such as Islamic Relief to maintain life-saving monthly food support to more than 250,000 persons displaced by the Saada rebellion.Al-Kohlani said that he received a letter from the WFP in which the organization said that it could no longer maintain its assistance and WFP will be required to reduce rations to 50% of the planned May basket. For his part, the WFP Gian Carlo Cirri reviewed humanitarian activities of the program in reducing suffering of the displaced people because of sedition in Saada and Harf Sufyan.WFP has received less than 30% of the funding it requires in order to maintain vital food and nutrition activities to displaced families and can no longer maintain its assistance, he said.He said that if the program doesn’t receive any support before September, it will have to suspend activities entirely, including nutrition support to 50,000 children under 5 years of age.The dire funding situation is not limited to the displaced people operation alone. Overall in 2010 WFP is facing a shortfall of 75% of its requirements or the program will be forced to suspend operations in Yemen, he said.
