Ceremony in Sana’a on Earth Day

The US embassy has commemorated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with a ceremony in the Old City of Sana’a, Yemen.
US ambassador to Yemen Stephen Seche inaugurated a new drip irrigation system that recycles water from the ablutions at a local mosque to irrigate a community vegetable garden. The irrigation project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented in partnership with the local community and the Ministry of Religious Endowments, helps conserve water while providing the community with food and livelihoods, helping to promote the continued sustainability of the Old City. In his remarks, Seche highlighted the importance of water conservation in Yemen.He reiterated the commitment of the United States to assist Yemen in addressing the water crisis facing the country through community-level projects that use scarce water resources responsibly and strategically.Earth Day, established in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, is observed globally every year to bring together individuals, private organizations and governments to promote environmental conservation and natural resource management.
