IFAD preparing designs of $ 38-million Yemen agricultural, fish projects

The International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD is currently conducting the designs of two developmental projects in Yemen for poor farmers and fishermen. The two projects cost $ 38 million. The representative of the IFAD in the country Fathya Bahran said the two projects receive finance from the fund, the Islamic Development Bank, the European Union, the government and beneficiaries.One of them is aimed to support the growing of coffee and vegetables and producing of honey in an effort to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers through sustainable development in Yemen's rural areas, she said.The project will boost growth and improve technology of coffee, vegetables and honey and improve rural activities and producers and markets connection through contracts that will focus on sticking to international and domestic quality standards, she said.It will also expand the opportunity for small producers to access sustainable development institutions in eight of Yemen's 21 provinces.The target cities are Lahj, Abyan, Sana'a, Dhamar, Amran, Hodeida, Ibb and Taiz. The project would be commissioned in mid 2010.The second project is prepared for fishermen in the coastal areas and aimed to improve their livelihoods. Its implementation will start in mid 2011.Bahran also noted that the IFAD will start next year the designs of a third project that will focus on creating jobs for poor and rural people.
