The Government labeled the clashes that roiled Aden in the past few days as "a failed coup attempt."
Commenting on the Southern Transitional Council's rebellion acts that drew close to a military takeover against the government in the temporary capital Aden by Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign issued a statement on Thursday to denounce it and explain how the turmoil unfolded.
"The city of Aden witnessed in the past few days a failed coup attempt against the legitimate government perpetrated by the militia of the so-called Southern Transitional Council."
The government said the militias, on Sunday, "dispatched forces, tanks and armed vehicles across civilian neighborhoods … and attacked state institutions" including the Judiciary Compound and the Cabinet headquarters. The militia "further attempted to approach and seize control of the presidential palace."
The militia's acts led to the killing and injury of dozens of people including presidential guards. The militia looted state weapons and ransacked and burnt the houses of military commanders.
The Government said that the impediments to its function and the formation of paramilitary militias outside its regular armed forces is a violation to the UN Security Council's resolution 2216 on Yemen.
"The Republic of Yemen considers the coup attempt committed by the rebels in Aden, the continuous acts to undermine and impede the work of the legitimate government and the formation of armed militias outside the command of the Armed Forces a blatant violation of the UNSC resolution no. 2216 (2015)," it said.
It affirmed that "such acts threaten the security of the region, violate the principle goal for which the Arab Coalition … was established."
It vowed to "continue its duties in the interim capital and spare no effort to safeguard the interests of the Yemeni people and maintain the country's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity."
It thanked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for mediating the withdrawal of the rebel militia from government outposts they had seized and bringing the bloodshed to end . It also thanked the brotherly and friendly countries that condemned the rebellion. It called on all brotherly and friendly countries to continue supporting Yemen in these hard times in accordance with the international resolutions.
