The European Union issued on Friday a statement expressing concerns that violence threatens the process of the peaceful political transition in Yemen. “Last night's resignation of the President of Yemen as well as the Yemeni Prime Minister and his Cabinet, coupled with the violence that we have witnessed in Sana'a and in several provinces of Yemen, including in Mareb, is putting the remarkable promises of the Yemeni transition in jeopardy.
The EU considers that the implementation of the roadmap provided by the Peace and National Partnership Agreement and the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative on which Prime Minister Bahah's government's solid programme to address Yemen's urgent fiscal, economic and institutional challenges was based, should remain a reference for the transition.
Ansar Allah and its allies must now take clear public responsibility for their actions. This should start with the release of Dr Ahmed bin Mubarak and a clear rejection of violence as a political tool. The Yemeni people deserve democratic and unitary institutions responding to their legitimate aspirations.
The EU stands by the Yemeni people at this critical juncture.”
