The UN Security Council imposed sanctions on former president and two Houthi leaders for threatening Yemen's peace, security and stability and obstructing the political process. "The Security Council’s 2140 Sanctions Committee designated three individuals as subject to the assets freeze and travel ban measures outlined, respectively, in paragraphs 11 and 15 of Security Council resolution 2140 (2014), adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations," a press release issued late Friday said.
According to the press release, the Council ordered a freeze of all assets and a global travel ban on former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi military leaders Abd al-Khaliq al-Houthi and Abdullah Yahya al Hakim.
All 15 members had agreed to blacklist Saleh and Houthi military leaders, Lithuanian UN ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite, chair of the council's Yemen sanctions committee, said.
The Committee stressed the need for robust implementation of the Sanctions as an important tool in achieving a peaceful, inclusive, orderly and Yemeni-led political transition process.
"The Committee reminds Member States of their obligations under resolution 2140 (2014) to ensure that any funds, financial assets or economic resources are prevented from being made available by their nationals or by any individuals or entities within their territories, to or for the benefit of the individuals designated by the Committee."
It also urged them to take the necessary measures to prevent the entry into or transit through their territories of the individuals designated by the Committee.
The Sanctions Committee appointed on 16 April based on the 2140 resolution adopted on 26 February, under which the Security Council set up a sanctions regime that includes an asset freeze and travel ban against peace spoilers and human rights abusers to be designated by the Committee.
