Yemen’s Special Olympics floor hockey team have become world champions for the first time in the country’s history, after their crushing defeat of the Swedish team 5-1, in the finals in the US.During the final match, attended by thousands of hockey fans in Idaho, the Yemeni national team played aggressively, scoring a goal at the first minutes of the match.During the first half, the Yemeni team played extremely aggressively, scoring two goals. The Yemeni team continued their attack during the second half, bolstering their score by scoring their third goal. It was also during the second half that the Swedish team scored their only goal in the match.Yemen’s national team qualified for the finals following their defeat on Friday of the Chilean team in the semi-final by a score of 3-1.The Yemeni team demonstrated their superiority over previous champions, all of whom are famous for their technical abilities. Yemen managed four victories, defeating the hosting American team1-0, the Venezuelan team 2-1, the Germans 5-3, and India 3-0.The Yemeni team continued on their triumphant run in the semi-finals, beating Chile 3-1 and Peru 4-1.The head of the Yemeni Olympic Mission, Dr. Eman Hashim Enqad expressed her delight over the Yemeni team’s achievement in a telephone conversation with Saba news. This was the team’s first championship victory since their establishment in 1998. “We expected to win, and we weren’t worried about the Swedish team.” Enqad continued saying, “our heroes fulfilled their promise when they said,” “we will win and honor Yemen.” “And they did,” Enqad concluded.Enqad invited all Yemeni’s, institutions and stakeholders to support these heroes with all forms of moral support, as this is considered the first world championship for Yemeni sports. Yemeni Special Olympics chairman, Faris al-Sanabani, promised to honor the team with a well-deserved reception after their return to the country.Yemen’s Special Olympics team won second place in the world hockey championships in Japan in 2005. Now, their even more significant victory in the USA will be added to their resume.
