Defense Minister Mohammed Nasser Ahmed survived Tuesday a terrorist attack targeted his convey.
A security source said that the car bomb struck the minister's convey as it was moving in a street behind the building of Sana'a radio after leaving the weekly cabinet meeting. The blast killed 6 soldiers of the minister's escort and 2 citizens and wounded 14 civilians. The attack occurred a day after the Defense Ministry announced the death of Saeed Ali al-Shihri, the second in command of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), in Hadramout province along with six other militants. Al-Shihri has been held by the US at Guantanamo. In November 2007 he was transferred to Saudi custody, and underwent a program designed to lead people away from terrorism, according to press reports. He left for Yemen, despite travel restrictions to stay in Saudi Arabia. The US State Department notes that he was publicly identified in January 2009 as the deputy leader of AQAP
