The sources of Yemen's Coastguards Authority said that seven fishermen escaped on a small boat had claimed the pirates attacked the two ships as they sailed in the Gulf of Aden.
The sources affirmed that the 22 fishermen taken as hostages by the pirates were Yemenis.
"Before the pirates took control of the two ships, seven Yemeni fishermen escaped on a small boat to report the attacks to the authorities in Aden", said the sources.
Somali pirates freed last week a hijacked Yemeni cargo ship and its eight crew members without a ransom after an appeal by local clan elders and regional officials. The ship was seized last month in the Arabian Sea.
A Yemeni security official had said the pirates were initially demanding a $2 million ransom to release the ship and its crew of three Yemenis, three Somalis and two Panamanians.
