YSMO director flies to Geneva to participate in 2010 BWC meeting

Director General of Yemen Standardization,Metrology and Quality Control Organization (YSMO) and member of Yemen's National Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical,Biological and Toxic Weapons Ahmed al-Bashah headed on Sunday to Switzerland.
The visit comes to participate in the 2010 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Meeting of Experts that will be held at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 23 to 27 August. Talking to Saba, the YSMO director made clear that the BWC conference would discuss and promote common understanding and active action on offering assistance and coordination with the relevant organizations upon request by any State Party in case of alleged use of biological or toxin weapons.Improving national capabilities for disease surveillance, detection and diagnosis and public health systems would also be included in the conference agenda.He also added the conference would review work sheets from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) as well as from other organizations and authorities on the BWC and memorandums of understanding.The BWC meeting is going to deal with the enhancement of international cooperation and supporting the national capabilities for states which might by exposed to danger as a result of violations of the Convention.It is worth to mention that the Biological Weapons Convention, more formally referred to as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction, opened for signature in 1972 and entered into force in 1975. It currently has 163 States Parties, with a further 13 States having signed but not yet ratified.
